Met Office web site ... forcing different default on map display
 

.... not sure how others are getting on with this: I'm trying to
persevere with it but there are irritations .... but also work-arounds:-

One of which is this. If you use the 'Map' display to display, say,
rainfall, then decide to look at the visual (satellite) data, THEN
decide to refresh using either CTRLR or the browser drop-down menu,
then the display will _default_ back to the first field you used ...
thus in this case, I would have in the url bar at the top ....

If you now display the visual image, THEN CHANGE THE LAST ELEMENT in the
url string to replace 'Rainfall' with 'VIS', now any refresh action
should display the latest visual image.

You can obviously save the url (or any other - play around with the
display to find the other string endings) to a bookmark or as I do, to a
local 'quick-start' file which I use as my home page.

It's worth trying this as the data are very high quality - just clunky
to manage!

.... I entirely agree Phil! I'm trying to give the breakfast served up by
the dog the best of chances, but it's hard going; like you, I use other
sites for the most part - the Met Office site has virtually dropped off
my 'operational' list.

I just loaded a vis sat loop of the UK, what a joke. It took ages to
load, almost like dial up speeds, then the loop does not "loop" it
displays 1 frame, pauses for a very short time, then displays the next
frame. So far useless.

Surely the breakfast is served up *for* the dog, not by it.
Clearly the site has done for your brain and I'm going to make
absolutely certain that it doesn't do the same for mine. Your
diligence is commendable but why on earth should I have to faff around
in this manner for something that is inferior to the original in the
first place? (3 hr vs 6). I only use the Met Office site for the
rainfall radar and will continue to use the old site until they pull
it, then I'll be off elsewhere. Well done, Met Office - your self-
absorption knows no bounds.

.... LOL! (And I *think* that means 'Laugh out loud' - though the PM
thinks it means something else).

It shows a difference in experience and path through life Tudor. I've
always thought that a 'dogs breakfast' was the result of feeding the
aforesaid doggy something that didn't agree with it ... then it promptly
presented it on the living room carpet! Hence 'serving up' a dogs
breakfast. When we had a dog, many years ago, it ate what we ate - and
had its breakfast first! No 'mess' either before or afterwards!

Otherwise, I agree with the above: and for information, I happen to know
that the MO web team are patting themselves on the back all round at the
jolly good job they've done .... so it must be our fault ....
- silly us.

I have a feeling we here on usw are not viewed by UKMO as the target
audience for their website.
We know too much and are not Jo Public.
With an above average interest in the weather we are just considered
as anoraks.

I think the rubbish animation capabilty of the new website will not
endear it even to Jo Public.
Fancy just showing a load of jerks.
