What would be the effect of this colder (than usual) air over a milder (than
usual) sea surface from a convective point of view?

Andrew - When you post to Usenet, it helps if you quote sufficient of the
post (and the poster's name) to which you are replying, so readers can see
the context of the post and the reason for your words. When I read yours
here, I had to go searching through my list for a read article, as it had
long disappeared from my current list.

In answer to your question - It will be the first time in quite a long
period, that sea temperatures will be high enough, in relation the the air
temperature, to allow significant convective forcing. With all the
warm/hot air around of late, SSTs have been too low to do this.

In a northerly or northwesterly airmass regime more single cells affecting
coastal areas - more in the way of small hail, occasional tornadoes and
flash, bang, gone?

Hi Les

We have just had our first shower with small hail, here in Coleraine. The
single cells are well seen to the north of me, over the sea. Temp is
currently 9.8C.

Well, when colder than usual air passes over a warmer than usual sea, to quote
your original question, the result is enhanced convection. There now, you've
learnt something. Go away and think about it.
