derogatory remarks on here about folks living in the North by us
friendly Southerners yet the reverse is all too common.

As a Northerner living in the SE, I can say that this prolonged gale is a bad one - for any part of England, in the summer. I should know, I saw more than my fair share when I lived for 15 years 900' up in the Durham Pennines.

Like King George V, I feel the life of this thread is drawing steadily
towards its close. Allow me to summarise:-

TV weatherbimbettes should have a modicum of knowledge of the British
climate.

I am perfectly entitled to talk about "Effete Southern Poofters" as I
have a foot in both camps.

Small vigorous depressions like this one are not at all rare in June,
or in any other summer month. Large nationwide ones definitely
are.
We have returned to the default summers of the '50s-80s. The following
'90s blip was just that.

Born on June 26th 1949, I am a self-professed expert on this month. I
reckon 4 out of 5 of my birthdays are a wash-out. Last year's was
gloriously hot and sunny-another wash-out this year, I'm afraid.

True, but I think it's fair to say we haven't had one defaulting to this
extent that often in the last 15 years!

!5 years, you say. Hmm. I think it's a good few years less than that,
although this may be because I'm an ingrained pessimist about British
weather. Someone out there must have a statistic!

---------------------
The fabulous March hasn't helped either - I think there is a perception
that summer started in April after that, giving the impression that the
summer has had almost three poor months already which of course is not
the case!

Our Welsh forecaster Derek says it's the worst gales since 2004 -
Mumbles head reached i think about a gust of 67. SO not as long ago as I
had first imagined.

Thta's because us northerners have a huge chip on our shoulder :-)

As for the weather, I have collected 76mm from this depression, monthly
total 130.3mm. Could end up my wettest June since I came here.

Folk on Dartmoor don't worry though being tough hill folk SW'erners.

Chill Dave :-)

I agree with most of that and while I can't speak for June 1949 it makes
sense that there were some hot sultry nights around as I was born in
March the following year! I think you would be surprised how
knowledgeable some of those girls are with good meteorological
qualifications. The Beeb just knocks it out of them.

...... and Hull is a good way North of Manchester actually Will.;-) It
always surprises me how far north places on that side are. It's
something to do with East Anglia sticking out so much and being
asociated with the S.E I think.

Aye.

I don't go south of Manchester if I can help it, it's well over 100
miles and needs 2 1/2 hrs driving. The map has "Here be Dragons" on
it once you get past Stoke (160 miles, 3hrs+).

Trouble is it gets mildy windy and rains a bit and the "southern
poofters" go into panic the world is about to end mode. Meaning that
they might get slighly wet when outside for the 30 seconds it takes
to get from the front door to the car.

When it gets windy up here, you have to be very careful to a) not get
knocked off balance b) if opening a car door hang onto it very firmly
or the wind will have damn good try at folding it right back against
the side of the car or at the very least half drag you out. As for
the rain, that hurts so much you really don't want to face it.

I thought I'd finished with this thread but am v. upset at at Hull not
being up North.
Let me tell you this. When I was a lad and the A! was nothing more
than a muddy rutted lane with fingerposts it took me and my Dad in a
Rover 6 almost a day to get from Hull to Lon...(oh do shut up-mods.)
