Born in the early 1970s, so not quite old enough to remember the
summer of '76, but old enough to have vague memories of winter '79. I
was apparently born under a whopping great anticyclone in September of
that year, which might explain my weather preferences!

My own memory is that the weather broke around the time of the August
bank holiday, following which it ****ed down for most of September.

I heard a tale that said that when it started raining at a Test Match
at Lords/The Oval towards the end of August, the crowd started cheering.

Sorry - ignore that. I was thinking that you said that you were born in
1976.

Denis Howell was made Minister for Drought in 1976 but days later
heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, and he was made Minister of
Floods.

Nowadays he would be named Minister for Climate Change and wouldn't have to
keep changing his spots.

On further thought, perhaps we have such a beast.

Will

I know hindsight is a pretty wonderful thing Will, but I thought at the time you were laying it on pretty thick about a wiggling cold front and the potential of flooding in parts of N England mid week. I just didn't want to contradict you - perhaps that's why I always preferred being an observer and never made it into forecasting!

Bruce.
