Default [WR]S.Essex. Another glorious day in the Essex Olympic Mountains.

Perhaps some of the Devonians and others might be surprised by the
naturally hilly nature of the Olympic Mountain Biking Track. It is a
wonderful little corner of the South of the county just 10 miles from
here. The land rises rapidly from the salt marshes of Two Tree Island to
the ridge at Hadleigh. Spectacular views of the Estuary although they
haven't shown the pretty ruined castle yet. The pubs in Leigh-on-Sea
will be busy tonight though!

My son-in-law (foreign) will be racing tomorrow, but of course has
been practising.
He can't understand why, when the UK has some of the best mountain
biking
runs in the world, they are having it in Essex. "I've biked down
bigger molehills".

Yes I expected mountain biking to take place in mountains (perhaps
that part of Essex is regarded as mountainous in SE England). Helmet
cam on Fort William's World Cup track.

Never mind, a Lancashire girl got silver in the Modern Pentathlon and
Yorkshire got more golds than Australia so you've played your part up
there :-)

I don't know how the logistics work with athletes travelling to venues
outside London but in the case of Fort William, they would presumably
have to find accommodation for the competitors up there as it is much
too far away from London for a day trip. Perhaps that is why they
decided to have the event in Essex as it is a feasible day trip away
from London.

Watching a bit of the BMX competition the other day, it occurred to me
that BMX is to cycling as crazy golf is to golf.

Or as 20-20 is to cricket perhaps.
