Advice: Prolonged periods of cold weather can be dangerous, especially for the very young, very old or those with chronic diseases.

If you want more information about how cold weather can affect your health please visit www.nhs.uk. If you are concerned about your health or somebody you care for, please contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647, www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or your local pharmacist.

Hmmm. Thank God for that advice, otherwise those tens off millions that read the UKMO web site would have died......... Do these F&^%$ing idiots realise how ridiculous they sound?

Reminds me of yesterday late afternoon on Radio 5 Live, 4:30 I think.
Louise Minchin read out the areas covered by "a series of yellow
alerts for tonight" and when she finishes, Peter Allen chips in.

"What's a yellow alert?" asks he.

"I don't really know" replies Louise.

"Perhaps we should find out then" reples Peter.

Understatement of the year! :D

Scoiffing doesn't change the fact that there those who need no warnings about virtually anything; and those who are so stupid that no warniong is quite sufficient. I have no problem with this, or the derided warnings in these threads. Over here idiots regularly get into trouble on the water or in the bush and mountains, breaking every commonsense rule along the way.

I cannot understand how anyone can get so worked up about a warning - for pity's sake worry about things that matter. Life's too short ...

Ah but the UKMO get a lot of money from the health budget, "health" is
turning into quite a business and money earner for the Met Office.

Provided the warnings are accurate... They warned us about a couple of inches
of snow earlier in the week, it rained. The week before not a peep when we
got an inch of the stuff, that lightly thawed then froze into sheet ice...

We have those as well, go walking up onto the fells in trainers, shorts and T
shirt and no map.

This is true, I take the warnings with a large pinch of salt as most of the
time they are not much more than a "heads up".

I suspect that the blame should go to the NHS, who presumably wanted
that to be included, rather than to the Met Office.

Yes indeed. The MetO gets mucho dosh from the NHS and they do what the
customer wants.
It's all about money nowadays in the MetO :-(

Anyone would think that the Met Office never used to charge for
information. Forty-odd years ago, my hourly - and minimum - charge for a
face-to-face briefing was £40; minimum charge for raising a bill for
other enquiries was £5. At the time, I wished the money went to the Met
Office instead of completely bypassing it.

Commercial dealings by the Office were, at that time, a bit of a
shambles. A large oil company was quoted a million pounds for a
contract by one section of the Office so they went to another branch
and got it for half-a-million.

So few tears will be shed if this afternoon Osborne announces that
health funding and hence funding for these alerts is cut?
