I think it would have been circa 1978 when the local weather guy on ITV
South - a man in his sixties known as "Trevor the Weather", who knew his
stuff and I think had probably previously worked for the MO but then
retired - forecast rain overnight one night, with perhaps a little snow
on the tops of the Downs. He then said something like: "I ought to
mention that the Met Office computer model is forecasting much more snow
than that, but I'm pretty sure it's wrong." The following evening he was
big enough to concede that he had been wrong and the model right. Of
course that was in the early days, when the chance of the model being
wrong - even at short range - was much higher than it is nowadays, so
his scepticism was understandable.

Trevor Baker. A couple of links here; the BBC seem to added 20 years
to his life!

Thanks for the links. I'm glad to see that he appears to be still alive.
He must be in his nineties by now.

If it's nostalgia you want, try: http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/weather/bbc.html

ITV et al are on other parts of the site.

I'd forgotten how much the map of the UK was tilted when the new
graphics were introduced in 2005. It really was awful!

So, basically, as I understand it from this thread, the low will be either

extremely deep, or relatively shallow, move towards the north of the UK or

rain?

Almost. There looks like being one low that runs along the channel, and one

that runs over northern UK. The southern one has a question mark over its

depth - but it is looking as if it will deepen quite quickly when it gets

going. If it is well developed as it runs up the channel it may well

entrain sufficiently cold air to produce snow on its northern edge.

A lot of ifs and buts, but these should reduce as the event nears.

I have yet to read dire warnings of 100ft drifts and temperatures of -20C, in the Daily Express, so can I presume tomorrow's blizzards have been cancelled?

Blizzards? Who said that?
Looks as if the low will run eastwards over SW England and up the English
channel. Doesn't look like an explosive (or even implosive :-P) deepener
any more - some limited deepening as it runs eastwards. Precipitation only
likely to be of snow over mountains of south Wales. This will all be
tonight and tomorrow morning, rather than Friday night. Friday afternoon
and evening sees a trough moving south across the UK, which will introduce
somewhat colder air and some short-lived northerlies.

Have you not read the title of this thread?

Ok, I admit that the actual word was not mentioned, but the implication is there especially for readers of certain tabloids.

Sorry, I didn't equate heavy snow with blizzard - I guess I was being
overly mindful of the definition.
