And just how many schools actually closed when an inch or
two of snow lay on the ground in the 1960s?

The main problem nowadays seems to be that most of the teachers
seem to

live 20 or more miles away from their schools, and that if almost
no

teachers can get to school there's no one to supervise the pupils.

Personally I think that even if only a handful of teachers could
get to

school, the pupils would still be safer at school than left to
their own

devices for the day. (For I bet that most of their parents don't
take

the day off from work to look after them.) But of course the
schools are

afraid that if anything bad should happen then they'd be sued.

So you are saying that teachers 50-60 years ago lived more locally?

Yes. That's what I've read. A proportion probably wouldn't even have
had cars, and in many cases public transport wouldn't have been a
viable alternative..

At my Grammar school, in the late fifties, a few had cars, some cycled
in, and one had a motorbike and sidecar. The headmaster lived about a
hundred yards from the school. I doubt any of them lived more than 5
miles from the school. Public transport - buses and trains - was pretty
reliable, regardless of the weather.
