I tend to make more spelling mistakes these days that are neither typos
or not knowing how to spell the word correctly. My brain seems to just
do its own thing, sometimes making me type a completely irrational word.
I put it down to an age thing but it's very annoying when some smart
person draws attention to it and corrects you as if you didn't know!

OT I know, but I certainly notice the same thing. It's like your typing
fingers are operating at arm's length, so to speak, from the rest of your
brain (because familiarity with a PC keyboard eventually translates into not
having to pay conscious attention to the words you're typing, so the part of
your brain that works out the required letters to type in a word is not
subject to the final editing/correction that conscious thought brings).

Personally I think that it's quite an interesting phenomenon because of what
it might illustrate about exactly how the brain processes words for typing.
I did mention this to Trevor Harley once, knowing of his professional
interest in these matters (see http://goo.gl/H5o74 for instance), but I
think he too felt that it was likely just a consequence of the years
clicking past.
