Should we think about creating uk.sci.weather.moderated?

Just a thought - then we could include posts by those of us only
interested in talking about the weather, rather than allowing the trolls
free rein...

The hillfile is your friend.
Just this morning I have dumped 6 people in there, the 3 main protagonists
and 3 others who have allowed themselves to become embroiled in this.
I know I have waded in myself on occaison but enough is enough!

I got sick of seeing thread after thread descend into absuse, debate,
even heated debate is one thing but this isn't that. It's not even witty
or amusing.

And the most pathetic thing of all is that it's not kids or teenagers doing
this, it's grown men in their 50s/60s/70s, screaming obscenities at one
another. I don't even care who started it, they should all be ashamed of
themselves.

OK, you've given me the excuse to get that off my chest, time for
something a bit more constructive.

A moderated group?
Perhaps, thing is somebody has to moderate it.
I'm not sure how these things work on Usenet but presumably
you can post what you want but it could be deleted if deemed innapropriate.

Alternatively, are all posts 'screened' by a moderator beforehand and they
only appear if passed fit for publication?
If so that's no good for a weather group that needs to be 'real time' in
nature, especially during notable events.

Moderation is for forums, as we all know and is why we post here, even though usenet is archaic and is slowly dying.

There are plenty of moderated forums to post on for anyone who wishes to be moderated.

What is that then, a file containing your favourite hill walks? :-)

From my understanding of the uk.rec.cycling.moderated newsgroup, that
is how it works.

It's been talked about before, but somebody has to host the group and monitor it. Usually someone with a commercial interest in weather. Most of the original professional contributors have now gone anyway. I used to be able to access the number of people following the group, but since moving from demon (14 years ago!) I can't check the numbers. There cannot be more than 20 people regularly following this now. The Navitron (for us off griders) is a well organised and run group without any of the ego madness that is going on here..

Dawlish was hounded off here a couple of years ago, but then slowly snuck back in. Pity he is so abusive as he can be quite charming and constructive at times. I guess I am out of here as well now, two seems much more constructive and informative.

Another group I post too, uk.rec.cycling.moderated, was set up for the
same reason (the infestation of uk.rec.cycling by anti-cycling thugs was
way, way worse than anything that has happened on here though). The
moderated group is much quieter than the original group ever was,
sometimes there are issues with posts getting delayed or contentious
moderation decisions, and some refuse to post there because they feel
the moderators are too militant. On the plus side, it is possible to
have civilised, reasonable debates without the risk of threads
descending into chaos.

One of the main issues with moderation, as I see it, is you have to
decide who is going to do the job, and you have to hope that they will
not let their own cognitive biases get in the way of fair moderation. It
can be likened to being a local politician, it can be a time consuming
and thankless task and you need a thick skin to handle the inevitable
whinging when someone has their post deleted (especially if it a
marginal decision).

The 'moderator' can be a 'robot' so real-time postings may not be a
problem, as long as they are from existing known users.

I haven't read it all yet but this FAQ may help:

And not very well, if one goes by all the complaints about biassed
moderators.
