Default What a difference a day makes!

Hi

What a difference a day makes!

Cold NE'ly have now set in across Northern England and Scotland with heavy rain and temperatures of around only 10 or 11°C.

I notice that Cairngorm had a 1200 UTC temp of just 0.8°C, so this rain might be falling as snow on the highest tops.

In contrast, here in mid Devon, we've just about got away with it so far with a max of 20.8°C earlier today.

Bruce.

The cold plunge that I talked about 8 days ago. The models were showing the correct outcome very well.

Did you hear David Shukman on the news - temperatures have halved (30 to
15)? And he's supposed to be a science correspondent. The whole article
was well over the top with other less than correct statements.

Yes, I did. And he said it *twice*; the second time, with actual figures "From 30C to 15C". Surely someone quality assures those broadcasts, but they don't appear to have been bright themselves to realise his abject error.

I'm sure the BBC will get complaints, but I'm not sure they will address them!

It has to be expected when replacing hot air 564dm with rather cool
air 546dm.

Not that warm here, 7 to 8 C all day. Fairly steady rain, total 37 mm
0300 to 2000.

might be falling as snow on the highest tops.

I must be missing something 15 * 2 = 30... ergo 15 is half of 30.

You can't say that when you are talking about temperature Dave. 0C is an arbitrary value. 30C is 303.15K and 15C is not half of that!

So, on a cold winter's day, when the temperature struggles to 1C and
the previous day was 0C, you'd say it was infinitely warmer? Perhaps if
you had a more accurate thermometer that had shown it to be 0.1C one day
and 1.0C the next, then it would be merely ten times warmer?
