The web-cam of the Barneo ice-station at 83.8N 4.5W yesterday, shows a
ship in the background. I reckon the buoy is about 80nm from open water. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole/NPEO2013/18.jpg -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. 'In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.' - Benjamin Franklin |

Just out of interest. After five months of watching a buoy with a ridge in the background and the only mild excitement being a melt-pond forming and then draining away, it came as a bit of a shock this morning to see the ice-breaker in the background. I can only assume it's there to pick up the buoys and any other instruments before the floe goes charging off through the Fram Strait. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' - Isaac Asimov. |

I can still access it - and from a different computer. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' - Isaac Asimov. |

Looks like the NE passage has been open (without ice breakers I mean) this
year for a number of weeks (and maybe a few yet to come). But the passage between the ice pack and Severnaya Zemlya is the only part that looks a little dodgy. Anyone have better information as to whether it's been freely navigable or not? |
