The 'Great East Berkshire Dry' goes on .....

to 28/0900Z September 2003:

1. September rainfall .. 6.2mm (10% eLTA 1971-2000)
easily the DRIEST September for our short record (began 1999); previous
driest September 2002 with 26mm.
Of more significance, comparing with adjacent Beaufort Park (BP) record
(with which we seem to be comparable/within 4% by monthly rainfall), it
would be DRIEST September since *at least* 1971 (11.5mm in September of
that year).

2. Would be (if maintained), the DRIEST any-month in our short record;
driest was last month (August 2003) with 14.2mm.
For the BP record, if we are comparable, then this would be the driest
*any-month* since Aug 1995 (3.8mm), but note that in Feb 1998 BP had
just: 8.0mm.

3. August and September rainfall (combined .. perhaps more interesting).
As at 28/0900Z, total rainfall Aug/Sep=14.2+(6.2 so far)=20.4mm (17%
eLTA):
Looking at the Beaufort Park record (since 1971), cannot find a similar
pairing of such-named months with less rainfall. The nearest I can find
is the August+September pairing in 1972 (another dry year), with 53mm.
Often, if August is dry, then September makes up for it, or a wet summer
is followed by a dryish autumn.

4. Rainfall so far *this year* here at Tawfield = 340mm (~72% eLTA
1971-2000)

Still go three rain-days to go of course, and the cloud outside is
looking a bit threatening .....;-)

Martin.

I got the impression from the CF forecast that this coming week
wasn't going to give the quantities of rain that were originally
being envisioned, at least in the south.

Martin, you're nearly the lowest in the UK ... 3.3mm at Bognor, but
I'm a bit suspicious of the 1.5mm on the 22nd there.

Philip, I have hi-res copies of hourly radar imagery for that date and
it's reasonably consistent with the 1.5mm reported at Bognor. The rain
was light and patchy in this area and some locations over and just
East of the Isle of Wight may have had no moderate rain at all.

The radar indicates that St Catherines point and Thorney Island would
have had rainfall amounts similar to Bognor; a quick check of
WeatherOnline indicates 24 hour totals of 0.8mm and 3.2mm
respectively. Shoreham was reported as 2.2mm, all in line with the
radar. Let me know if you'd like to see the images.

... well, that post did the trick: 1.8 mm from a sharp shower yesterday
(early PM/Sunday 28th) 1.8 mm, so total so far this month now = 8.0mm.

Rainfall - Last Monday 22nd Sept - here in Alresford we
had showers/drizzle on/off in the PM - not a lot of
the wet stuff came down, the roads/pavements dried
out between showers, neither do I have a scientific
rain gauge and I didn't check my 'water collection'
until Tues am, to my surprise, there was approx 1.5 mm
of rain water in both collection units .I have read on this ng
others posting much larger amounts of rain for that day - as I
say, I was surprised how little we had - I have had to water
the garden on 2 or 3 occasions during this past 6 days -
my front lawn has had it for this year, burnt out - so
Q. Is there a site near here (Alresford mid Hants) where
I can view the usual weather data ?

cheers Jrm

Thanks Dave ... we may therefore accept Bognor's monthly (to date)
total as well.
