The recent thread on salt spray well inland was interesting, but it is important to note that a lot of salt spray can end up in the atmosphere with little wind, all it needs is a big ground sea.

Take today, a spectacular ground sea and air full of spray. http://www.sennen-cove.com/lbtdy.htm In this case the wind was a light easterly, but a light SW would have resulted in salt spray across much of Cornwall.

A gale, or even strong winds, are not always necessary.
