The Express Says 27/28th Nov Now even MORE forecasters warn of Arctic freeze: Britain to plunge into severe cold winter WEATHER forecasters have today all but unanimously agreed Britain is days away from what could turn out to be the one of the most severe winters in years. .....Mr Corbyn accused officials of ignoring warnings the country is woefully unprepared for what could be one of the harshest winters ever to hit. He said: "The NHS is in very severe trouble after ignoring warnings form anyone other than the Met Office which has insisted the models are suggesting mild conditions this winter. Of course it may be he has the germ of a good system here. If his "system" forecasts 'warm' then all he has to do is forecast 'cold' and vice versa. |

Reminded of a cartoon from fortyish years ago in the Mail(?). Two forecasters playing darts. Dartboard has different types of weather marked on it. The mat has three oche markings: the one nearest the board is "short range", next is "medium range", then furthest is "long range". -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. In fact - at least for the southern half of the UK - the weather looks like being positively benign for the time of year, with nothing worse than a little fog and frost. I see you've quoted the Daily Express in support of Pier's forecast, which smacks of desperation. That way,.the Express and Piers go round in ever-decreasing circles, with the inevitable end result :-) Now that would be a very positive outcome! Why do lazy ignorant red top editors fall for these weather charlatans shock horror cold winter weather in winter scare stories. Do they never notice that they are inevitably wrong? Or is it just that they will publish anything if it sells more newspapers (s/news/gossip/). There is a chance of an M-class solar flare in the next couple of days with a tinier chance of seeing an aurora in Northern England watch Spaceweather or AuroraWatch for genuine predictions and updates. http://www.spaceweather.com/ It is rather dull and quiet today http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ Don't forget to look for Geminid meteors on 14th Dec if skies are clear - they can put on a decent show. -- Regards, Martin Brown |

It would be good if the BBC's planned Weather Competition (I think that was the name?) that Roger Harrabin was promoting went ahead. It would at least align the various forecasting camps into "competing". This is the sort of thing that I'd happily give my spare time towards to help facilitate. Would be very interesting indeed.
