Default Sun, what sun!

Tomasz Schafernaker on country file said today would be the best day of the
week with most places in in England and Wales having a fine day with
unbroken sunshine, we didn't even get 0.1 hours!!
Think he was too excited about later this week

Overcast cool and damp here all day, temp around 5c.

Still I'm sure we will end up with endless hours of sunshine once the cold
stuff kicks in

Glad you mentioned that Graham. Did my local forecast after watching
that and told everyone it was going to be a sunny day after early
morning rain cleared based on that forecast. It was almost zero sun here
as well but the temp was 2C higher than forecast. Doesn't bode well for
forecasting the tricky stuff to come!

Lovely sunshine this morning up here on bleak Dartmoor. Felt warm, but it
was only 5.5C.
Go west young man :-)

We had some sunshine - between the showers.

Now bracing ourselves for Wednesday/Thursday with a Yellow snow warning
from 09:00 on Wednesday to 23:55 on Thursday.

remember :-(

We are just outside the warning area. Maybe the activities of dogs are our only
chance of yellow snow :-)

Graham, I'm sure you'll be happy for me and it will cheer you to know
that we had 4.2 hours of the lovely, bright warm stuff today and with a
temperature of 9.6C this afternoon it felt, dare I say it, spring-like!

Now over 90 hours of sunshine this month - should make another 100+
month as was November and December.

Smile!

Norman, we're in yellow and you're not, though I would anticipate the opposite in reality.
We don't get much snow this side from a Westerly direction, but I guess subtle wind changes can impact on you, as per the previous weekend.

It's a NW'ly airflow on Thursday. Goodness knows why the Peak District is
not in the warning area. It will be :-)

I agree with you, David. What is critical here is whether or not the gradient
wind direction has anything north of due west in it. In this case the
prediction is that it will be at least WNW, if not NW. I feel sure, therefore
that if there is significant snowfall it will come further south than the
warning area indicates.

Again we currently have the conflicting situation where we are outside of the
warning area yet the current Peak District forecast for Thursday states:

"A very wintry day, even at low levels. A strong and bitterly cold wind
will bring frequent and at times heavy snow showers with significant
accumulations likely. The showers may well begin to ease off late in the day
as the strong winds turn northerly and abate a little. Freezing level around
200m."

If we get the snow the forecast is right and the warning is wrong. If we don't
get the snow the warning is right and the forecast is wrong. Not easy for the
average punter to make an informed decision. My bet is that the forecast will
be right, because of the predicted wind direction, and that the southern limit
of the warning area will prove to be too far north.
