Default [WR] Copley, 3cm snow 28mm rain 1027mb

Hi, All,

Yet more snow here today, full cover 3cm but horrible wet stuff.

Wettest 09Z-09Z since August 2013 (it really has been dry over here in the rain shadow with those lovely westerlies)

08:50Z N 10KT 3 miles, overcast, light snow. 1C/0C 1027mb 3cm full snow cover.

24hr to 09Z 13th MetO site Max 9.3C min 0.1C grass -0.6C(under snow) rain 28.2mm(part snow converted)sun 12th 0.0hr

Precipitation all fell with a rising barometer from 1020mb at 21Z 12th to 1027mb at 09Z 13th

Unlike many on this ng, I do not like easterlies. Bring back the fair weather westerlies!

At the old Met Office, one day in February, the gardeners cut the grass
and shovelled snow at the same time; the mower acted as a snowplough
whilst attempting to deliver the coup-de-grace.

Why on earth are people cutting grass at this time of year?
Plenty of time later (unfortunately). Mine is still not growing anyway so a
cut would be pointless.

Will,
Can't understand why your grass isn't growing as Haytor is quite a lot milder and wetter than Copley over winter. We are warmer in summer, by day that is. I feed mine, love the sight of freshly mown grass and it needs to be kept cut for the MetO site standard. Always cut on high - looks good (:0)

Why? Because the lawns have needed a cut! I've done 2 cuts since the start of the new
year. The grass has barely stopped growing this winfer.

I think it is the soil. Grass is not growing on the open moor either. The
soil is quite stony and free draining and soil temperatures can remain quite
low throughout March. At 30cm it is still only 6C. I generally find the
grass does not get going until the 30cm soil remains consistently above 7C.
I never feed my grass (why would I?), which is quite mossy as a consequence.
If I could start the garden again I would get rid of most of the grass
completely and replace it with granite chippings and lots of terraced beds.
But I'm talking thousands of pounds for a project like that!

Astonishingly rapid changes - it was sunny and close to 15C only a day
ago. It is just miserable grey and wet 5C down in the vale of York.

I deployed about half my compost heap before the weather switched. Poor
daffodils are looking rather confused again since the warm weather
brought most of them into flower just in time for another cold snap.

Mine kept growing long into the autumn and is plenty long enough to cut
but I am waiting until the ground is a bit drier to avoid compacting it.
Neighbouring farms have got cows out on grass this week.

Several neighbours have already cut their lawns here in North Yorks (and
they did need cutting).

It was Spring 1970(?) after a mild winter when then the daffs
around the Met Office came into full flower in February. March and
April were as cold, if not colder, than the winter had been and the
daffs seemed to go into a state of suspended animation and stayed in
flower into April.
