I have Windows 7 and am told I am eligible for the free WIndows 10
upgrade. My question: WIll this be a clean install and wipe everything
else off? Firefox/Thunderbird, Office, and all my little weather diddies?

Thanks

Hi Keith.
No it doesn't do a clean wipe. I've 2 laptops, a Windows 7 and 8.1, and I used the Windows 7 for the upgrade to Windows 10. So far no issues other than familiarity. Old apps still there; bookmarks, etc. I'll wait a while before upgrading the newer laptop - let the kinks of Windows 10, whatever they are, be ironed out first....

Windows 10 installed fine for me, upgrade from 8.1 . Go for it, it looks a
nice OS.

Back up first though, of course. Then keep your fingers crossed.

Been some reports of upgrade going tits up:

Also this little problem was reported a few days ago:

The thing to remember is to ensure that your PC is up to date with all
its patches and that it doesn't have any issues. Many problems have been
caused because the user hoped that upgrading will fix them. Will's
advice about sfc/scannow - do it first.

There is a possibility that the upgrade will fail. However, there is an
alternative - see
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...n-tool-install if
needed. And backup first!

Yep good advice, I forgot I installed several hours worth of updates for 8.1
before upgrading.

I upgraded my main PC (Windows 8.1) and my creaky old laptop (Windows 7)
to Windows 10.

Both went absolutely fine with no problems except the graphics driver
was out of date (which caused a slight issue but was soon fixed). So I
suggest making sure your main drivers are up to date before you go ahead
with the update.

And my old laptop (IBM Lenovo T90 with 2GB RAM) now runs quicker than it
did under Windows 7, especially after I disabled/deleted all those
'live' tiles in the Start menu.

The hard drive was badly fragmented afterwards so once all was well I
deleted the old version of Windows and then did several defrags. That
speeded things up a bit on the laptop.

All my personal settings, themes, email, Firefox etc etc were all kept
though I must admit that I now prefer Microsoft Edge than Firefox on my
laptop as it seems to use far less resources and is quicker and more
reliable.

Do be aware that the default program for opening specific file types may get
reset to the various Microsoft-supplied options. eg HTML pages started
opening in MS Edge by default now rather than Chrome, at least on my Win10
upgraded PC. Not a big deal, but a bit irritating to have to reset
everything manually to my own preferences.
