Don't the Met Office already have a very similar scheme for amateur
observers? I wonder why the BBC feel the need to duplicate it.

I guess because the are a separate entity to the Met Office and this sort of thing is becoming common. Weather Underground has been doing it for years - part of the reason they got bought by The Weather Channel. Which in turn is part of the reason IBM has bought parts of the The Weather Channel. Big Data looms large in the future of many spheres, and meteorology is one of them. Crowd sourcing is part of that. The BBC's scheme is a simple take on this.

BBC want to be seen as interactive. It is trying to appease its audience by inviting them to comment on the weather.
Are they opening themselves to abuse about the weather forecasts?
It all seems, and probably is trivial, and not for the likes of us me thinks.

Hopefully it won't make this ng or any of the other weather related forums redundant.

There is a wide audience out there who might like to comment on the weather, so we shall see the level of the postings in the fullness of time.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Although, I've posted a brief weather report, my concern is the accuracy of the postings, especially with regards to temperature on a hot sunny day. Stick a thermometer in a silly place & you'll get a silly reading.

I had the chance to lend my 'expertise' to this project. From what I've seen so far I'm glad I was too busy to make it.
Sorry to sound like a killjoy but isn't this kind of thing already being done by Twitter etc.
Why, oh why, are the BBC spending money on silly things like this? Surely the money would be better invested in serious meteorology - what the public want to engage with?
