Any idea what the annual average rainfall at Capel Curig is, Colin? I would imagine well over 100 inches?

I think it is of the order 4000mm per year.
100 inches or 2500 mm is what occurs on the highest parts of Dartmoor which
is not even the wettest place in England never mind Wales..

2612 mm??? Is that all? Crikey! There are many places in the western highlands, Snowdonia and the Lake District with double that amount!

How come these places never feature in the " highest daily rainfall" stakes?

Nigel,
Many of these sites are possibly not on the MetO AWS system and report to a different department.
Our Copley MetO climat. site, for instance, reports daily to the MetO climat. section. There is an Environment Agency rain gauge here that downloads constantly to the EA and can be shared by MetO, but will never appear in the daily summaries.
The MetO real-time summaries are from just a small part of the observing network.

Many thanks for that Ken.

Nevertheless, it would appear that these "daily summaries" should not necessarily be representative of the UK as a whole, if large areas of this island are excluded.....

Or, an appropriate disclaimer appended thereto?

The altitude of Capel Curig is a little over 600 ft or 185 m and 2612 mm annually may seem very high for such a height but it illustrates that in a wet mountainous area the rainfall in the valleys can still be high. This effect can even be seen here on the North Downs, in a small way.
Bet nobody pronounces the name as the locals do. :-)
