Default Rainfall total so far this year

172 mm so far this year, which while all in a day's work for Capel Curig, is extraordinary for east Scotland. And I'm sure my Davis gauge under-records.

To put it in perspective, I recorded only 547 mm for the whole of 2001.

My village is now cut off. And of course there's been no sunshine either.

That is a very impressive total. What's your normal January rainfall Trevor?

I think most people who have a Davis AWS and a standard 5" manual raingauge find
that the Davis systematically under-reads. Mine does by a variable factor of
10-20%. I suspect that much of the variability is wind-speed related. If your
total of 172 mm is based solely on the Davis measurements then my guess is that
the true rainfall is likely to be at least 190 mm. As you say, extraordinary for
east Scotland.

Statistics published in Met.O.856c for the 30-year period 1931-1960 give the
following averages for January:

Arbroath 57 mm
Braemar 96 mm
Craibstone 78 mm
Dunbar 47 mm
Dundee 65 mm
Edinburgh 57 mm
Gordon Castle 62 mm
Marchmont 71 mm
Nairn 49 mm
Perth 70 mm
Rattray Head 36 mm
Stirling 101 mm
Wick 85 mm

These figures confirm that your measurement of 172 mm for the first few days of
January really is exceptional.

As an aside the 1981-2010 January figures I have managed to obtain for
'Edinburgh' show Royal Botanical Gdns 69mm, Gogarbank (the current
'Edinburgh' I believe - it's near the airport, 76mm), and Penicuik,
which is probably more representative of where I am, 100mm.

Whatever, I have noticed that rainfall totals are highly variable in
areas such as this and the January rainfall thus far is a mere 17mm.
Less than 10% of Trevor's deluge.

The January average here over the last 20 years has been 79.1 mm. The total this month up to 6 pm is 179.4, so that's 227%.

At least I'm stuck at home. I wouldn't like to be marooned the other side of the floods. I am however down to my last three bottles of red wine so much as I like severe weather I'm glad that it seems to have stopped raining for now.

The Met Office has an amber alert for rain here tomorrow, but no rain is forecast according to the BBC.

It's the lack of sunshine that really gets me. None since the 29th of December, and just 1511 minutes in the whole of last month.

I've vaguely attributed to the Davis gauge under-recording to high rainfall rates, but I suppose that can't be right. It has been very windy here too. I have a cheap manual gauge too, and occasions that has read up to 30% more, but as you say, usually about 20% more. I can't use it now because the water table is so high my rain gauge floated away.

56 mm here to midnight just gone, average ~85mm for the month, peanuts
compared to yours but still enough to send the local River Meon to the
brink of flooding roads. The house-less flood plain is doing its job
though, it's flooded.
