Default US blizzard

I have been reliably informed by my elderly neighbour that the great US
blizzard due to hit today will then strike us in a week's time. He firmly
believes it and says he has been right in the past. Bless.

Surely everyone knows that it's three weeks? At least ISTR that's what
my father always said.

I did tell him John! :-)
I also told him to read my mild and wet Dartmoor forecast for next week.

Three days is what I remember. That could happen occasionally, not
because of the surface system crossing the Atlantic in three days but
because of changes in the upper-air pattern taking that long to develop.
If the snow was associated with an upper trough over the eastern US
with a southerly developing near Newfoundland, a downstream trough could
extend south near the UK.

Ah, but is that who the Express get their information from? Why don't
people ever draw conclusions like there are usually two or three
blizzards every winter on the US Eastern seaboard but we haven't had one
in the South for years. Much more obvious analogy to me.

There has been an huge Low parked on the west coast for a while now. Coincidental to what the Seattle seismologists are calling a Slow Quake. We get those do we not?

Someone at work today said does that mean we're going to get snow in a
months time... An old myth, but some maybe believe it in February ;-)

Even Carol Kirkwood made reference to it coming across the Atlantic but cautioned thankfully that snow would be unlikely.

Still a good time for vicariously taking a look at white stuff piling up on webcams...

It's all still a bit premature, when I went looking for it on the charts I was surprised to find that the deepening low was still over Alabama, but tomorrow will be interesting on the eastern seaboard. The really deep cold air is still a long way north though.

Yes, ATM it looks like it's still quite a nice day in Washington:

But the snow has reached Richmond, VA:
