Franklin P Jones John , Did you ever hear of Sir Atthol Oakeley. He was a royal blue blooded heavyweight wrestler who lived in Lynton the village just above Lynmouth North Devon. Back in September 1988 I was on a late summer holiday in Appledor and of course visited Doone/Ridd country in Exmoor and there in the visitors car park was a National Trust bookstand here I purchased Sir Atthol's expose of the real Doone/ Ridd saga. He claims that Lorna and John Ridd really did exists and were not R D Blackmoor fictional characters. Sir Athol who claimed to have Royal lineage was also a British champion wrestler in the 1920/30's Here's his Wiki entry. Interesting character. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atholl_Oakeley |

No. I haven't heard of him. Interesting. I knew that it's been suggested that the Doone clan really existed. Sir Athol who claimed to have Royal lineage was also a British champion wrestler in the 1920/30's Here's his Wiki entry. Interesting character. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atholl_Oakeley Thanks. He seems to have been a remarkable character. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." Franklin P Jones |

Had our fair share of this muck this first half of winter. 13 miles walk today and about 10 of it in thick fog or mist, our leader did well navigating. Sticky boggy ground underfoot even on the "softer" and lower eastern moor. At least it was dry and we even had a shot of sunshine at Dartmeet where I was tempted to get an ice cream in the 11C heat. Max. in Haytor +12.0C which is exceptionally mild for approaching mid-winter. Looks like more flooding misery on the way in the west and north in this renewed vile tropical spell but then later in the week northern Britain turns much colder with some snow which could possibly come south next weekend in a northerly when at least the sun should come out in drier and clearer air. No real pattern change yet though just a colder airflow off the Atlantic with a sinking jetstream once soggy, grotty Tuesday is out of the way.
