I just been looking at the Davis station gust speeds overnight, the two
highest I have found are West Wittering beach at 74knot and Prawle Point, Devon at 70knot. There was a 61knot gust on the beach at Hove. Quite windy here as well but nothing exceptional. Alan Chiswell Green, St Albans |

According to the BBC, there was a gust of 106 mph at The Needles in the Isle of Wight, which I make 92 knots. To Carol Kirkwood's credit, she made a point of saying that this was a very exposed location, and that maximum gusts inland had been more like 50-60 mph. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." I should have added that there was some sleet this morning, temperaturehad dropped to 3C. Alan |

There's inland and there's inland... and if she said that, she was misleading. Many populated parts of the south coast that are not 'very exposed' had gusts exceeding 70mph last night, including Southampton Dockhead (75 mph several times) and along the Solent coastline down past Portsmouth Harbour. 68mph gust at a reliable Hamble site 2 miles from me and no doubt places further east like Brighton, too. '70mph gusts in many populated south coastal areas' would be a better summary. While I have no problem with anyone being dismissive about exposed places like Needles Battery, it does annoy me when they switch from there to Swindon or Reading as if the south coast towns and cities don't exist! Heck, central Southampton is by some definitions 'inland' anyway! It was worse down here than '50-60 mph gusts' implies. Off now to help my next door neighbour with some fence rebuilding, had my 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest gusts for at least 3 years in my back garden, spread out over a 5 hour period, and the fencing did not like it. -- Dave Fareham (W) |

Not surprised Dave. Up here in the frozen north of Leicester, my highest gust was 39.9mph. My anemometer is only at 3m height at the end of my back garden, surrounded on all sides by two storey houses, but it gives me a good idea of wind speeds near ground level in a fairly level housing estate, so I'm keeping it there. I may add a rooftop one later for comparisons, but I can already compare with a suburban neighbour 300 yards to my east who publishes his rooftop readings to Wunderground, like me. There's another 10m site on the river Hamble, 2 miles away. Those two nearby sites recorded gusts of 72 and 68 mph respectively, compared to my 37 mph - a factor for gusts of about 1.9. The mean wind speed at the nearby suburban rooftop site was 1.8x higher than mine, but the riverside site was 3.9x higher on means. These are the kinds of things I'd like to investigate in more detail when I get my chimney top 2nd anemometer. -- Dave Fareham (W) https://www.wunderground.com/persona...ID=IENGLAND600 |
