Default Holy ****, look at GFS next weekend!

Blizzards in England? Good agreement in ensembles.
I'm wondering if I have planted out my greenhouse tomatoes too early :-)
Probably a lot of cold rain and wind low down, but above 200 metres???
If only it was January!

Snowy in Shropshire this morning. 2-3 cm full cover at 0500z, but
rapidly melting now with only a few patches left in the shade. It
would've been my latest "snow lying" day, had it hung around.
Plenty left on the high ground above 250 metres.

That's bad luck!
Just sunny with a chilly wind here. T +5.1C at 0950.
I almost recorded a snow lying day in October in 2003 - so annoying when it
melts quickly. Still, early days yet!

I sometimes wonder if the weather gods are mocking snow lovers. You
couldn't get synoptics
like this for love nor money back in that insanely mild December we've
just had but here we are towards the back end of April. I'm not
over-excited mind, A proper covering would be interesting but the
thought of watching wet snow swirling around in a raw wind without a
hope of settling isn't something that fills me with much anticipation.
Still, heavy snow at the end of April is hardly unprecedented.
April 1981, anyone?

We will. A good growing season. Plenty of thunderstorms and a bit of 25C+
heat.

What about 2013 Keith? That was a glorious summer and thundery at times
too. We must have had over 30 beach and garden BBQs that summer and the
weather for every single one was warm and dry. And we ate dinner outside
most evenings too. It was the best summer since 2005.

Another summer like that one would be good.

Then again, 2014 wasn't bad either.

July 18th 2013 we reached +29.8C in Haytor - awesome. Night min. only got
down to +13.7C as well, so a restless night in the warmth.
Mean max. was +22.9C 4.3 degrees above normal. What a month.
August was cooler at +20.3C but still above normal.

That was a most memorable July!

My maximum on the 18th was 28.8C with the hottest day being 30.5C on the
13th. The mean maximum for whole month was 24.9C. August's mean maximum
was 22.7C and was another dry and sunny month.

The most remarkable feature of that July was the peristently sunny skies
clocking up 328 hours of sunshine. The were 18 consecutively cloudless
days from the 5th to the 22nd!

I thought it would never end - shame it did.

I can't understand Will's remorse at the snow buggering off PDQ if we are not going to have the clear skies that go with it.

This summer reminds me of 1952, not because I can remember it but because I was looking at a painting of Sunny Stoke while I was in hospital this morning.

Scores of bottle kilns all sending children's picture book smoke stacks up to heaven where it fed the rooftops so well that they invented snow shovels for removing the vegetation it produced.

Talking about it to a civil engineer a few hours later, we agreed it must have been healthy enough, except when foggy overcast hampered the process. He remarked that houses were built without damp-courses and that old people smelled of mothballs and mildew on such occasions.

Without central heating, such overcast would regularly kill people with poor lungs. So that is something like twice in a lifetime but not for others.
