Tropical depression type feature in Tyrrhenian Sea
 

Just noticed this on meteox (10.30 GMT). A rotating feature with thunderstorm activity off Rome. Not picked up on the synoptic charts. Looks for all the world like a tropical depression !

It looks like this is just a bit of rotation with a thunderstorm to the east of
it.There's nothing in the satellite imagery to suggest it is tropical in nature.

Nevertheless, tropical storms and minimal hurricanes are not unknown in the
Mediterranean. The most recent was in November 2014 to the east of Sicily. A
Google search on 'Mediterranean hurricanes' brings up lots of references.

It certainly does not have tropical characteristics. The deep convection
over and near Italy is occurring under an upper vortex and tropospheric cold
pool. There does not appear to be any surface depression or low level
cyclonic circulation.
