Last month was the 2nd warmest December on record, falling 0.3C below
last year's record and only 0.02C above the previous record year of 2014. Last year was the warmest on record - no surprise there - being 0.99C above the 1951-80 normal. It was 0.12C above the previous record year of 2015 and 0.25C above the then record year of 2014. For anyone still holding a rather guttering candle for 1998, last year beat it by 0.35C. Although El Nino ended some time ago, the PDO index remains in positive territory and every one of the past 36 months have been postive. As far as I can see, the only other time this has happened in the records from 1900 was from August 1991 to July 1994.
