I learned this evening that Philip Eden died last week. As many will
know, Philip had been in a care home for some time suffering from
dementia.

I have known Philip for a very long time. We first worked together more
than 40 years ago and our paths have crossed frequently since then. He
was, and still is in a way, a significant part of my professional
career. He became a good friend as well as a colleague and I shall miss
him.

Philip was the instigator of this newsgroup. The diminishing number of
us who still populate the group owe him a great deal. The
meteorological community has lost one of its great enthusiasts.

Very sad news. Such a lovely man who always had time to discuss meteorology with amateurs. From his days on LBC through to Radio 5 Live he had that very rare knack of you being able to remember the forecast. Well written weather books, newspaper articles, 'Not the Long Range Forecast' the list goes on. RIP Philip.

Can't say I'm surprised. Just a pity people were so secretive when he got ill.
He and I had arguments on here but I have tremendous respect for his energy,
his enthusiasm and most of all his character. he had a fantastic memory of
weather events and data, he lived and drank climate and weather. A very great
person who deserves a place in history. Heaven is now a better place!

Yes a sad day. He was always very helpful to me and I was able to meet
him once when I visited his home with Ron. He had a massive knowledge
base in stored material and in his head and was always glad to share it
with us amateurs. Sympathies to his family and RIP.

Very sad news. Philip was a true gent.
He responded to my 1st post on USW in 2006.
I exchanged emails with him for several years.
I had the pleasure of visiting him in 2010 at Woburn with my wife.
The fact he was happy to guide and encourage an enthusiastic amateur Like myself speaks volumes for his character.
My thoughts are are with his family at this most difficult time.

Honoured that he visited us at Bablake & had lunch with us, though his choice of dry pizza and soggy chips in the school canteen didn't look very appetising, though he stuck at it neverthesless, and was very complimentary about the meal. We gave him a van load of equipment that had been replaced over the years, including a huge double Stevenson Screen that we man handled into his van, all of which I know he put to good purpose. From his days at 5 Live and in his newspaper columns, he was a a powerful voice, and a very dignified presenter of anything meteorological, but when you met him, he was quietly unassuming and charming.



I had been expecting this sad news for some time; he has already been sadly missed by so many for the last few years, his contribution however, will surely live on.

Indeed, not only so knowledgeable - he went out of his way to be friendly and helpful. The information he always seem to have at his fingertips was astounding.

I remember well him making me feel welcome when I first joined USW. I'm still using a minimum thermometer he let me have many years ago. A memory of Philip.
