I, too, am sad to hear of Philip's death. I spoke to him on the phone
occasionally when I was in the Met Office Press Office, something he
remembered years later when I had an email discussion with him about
(amongst other things) a Jardi rate of rain recorder at Kew Observatory.
He knew far more than me but didn't talk down to me. He shall indeed be
missed.

I knew Philip for several years while at the Telegraph and we regularly had lunch together. A truly lovely man as well as a giant in his field. This is very upsetting news particularly as I lost touch with him when his illness took hold.

understand that Philip's brothers are handling the funeral arrangements.

Yes. But he was argumentative (not a bad thing). He and I had to agree to
differ and not speak to each other after he called me "an extreme objectivist"
back in 1996 in an argument over what constituted "cold" or "warm" conditions.
I still laugh at that as I tend to be quite loose generally. He was
considered a little "prickly" too sometimes in his dealings with the MetO but
actually engendered a great deal of respect there as well. But his writings and
work speak volumes and will be an inspiration I'm sure for young amateurs
coming through now.

Very sad news indeed.

As everyone has already remarked, he was always so helpful and knowledgeable and he had a wicked sense of humour as well.

I always felt honoured when he took the time to, not just reply to my posts, but research the point in question.

He once spent a considerable amount of time researching my location in the Yorkshire Wolds in a discussion about frost hollows; there are very few people who would have taken the time to even respond.

I was saddened when he was taken ill, as I never had the opportunity to discuss the weather at his French property, not so very far from where I am now.
