BBC weather centre and appologies for incorrect forecasts

Listening to "Feedback" tonight on radio 4. after a listener complained, the
Manager of the BBC Weather Centre explains what happens when the forecast
goes wrong. He says " why they don't apologise but do say what went wrong.
And why if they are 12 hours out with a forecast they consider it " not a
bad forecast" !!!

How far ahead? I'd agree that 12 hours out when forecasting 5 days
ahead, or even 3 days ahead, is pretty good. If it's when forecasting 24
hours ahead, then it's rather poor.
