I suppose it's a rare winter which doesn't produce snow somewhere in the UK. Victor Indeed, but I'm working on the average conditions for my area with a minimum altitude of 300m asl and a maximum altitude of 470m derived using Met Office climatological 1961-90 data (rounded down to complete days) which show for Nov average days sleet/snow falling = 3, snow lying = 0 Dec average days sleet/snow falling = 6, snow lying = 1 Jan average days sleet/snow falling = 9, snow lying = 4 Feb average days sleet/snow falling = 10, snow lying = 3 Mar average days sleet/snow falling = 9, snow lying = 2 Apr average days sleet/snow falling = 4, snow lying = 0 So on average 38 more wintry days and 10 with snow on the ground ahead ! Mind you, I have yet to calculate more up to date stats which quite possibly could show a decrease. Hi Will,
I guess you will see some snow up there sometime this winter. For me, I am not so sure. Although we have had snow on the ground, (particualrly last year), there has always been a complication.. not enough, not cold enough, or rapid thaw. Still, the kids and folk around loved it. My post was relative to the dreary looking charts at the time, and although there were signs of a 'blip' 1 or 2 days ago, things look back to normal again ;( . Still, January is 2 weeks away, and I really hope something can break this setup. ---------------------------------------------------------- Well I used my sledge to good effect last year and it is all ready to go *when* the snow hits this winter ! One Sunday last winter it was like Cairngorm mountain up here on Haytor with all the car parks full and people parking on the road, ice cream and hot dog stalls and people whizzing down the slopes on plastic bags, sledges, bums etc etc. Sadly the next day it was all gone. Luckily I had my very own short sled run in the garden. Whhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Will. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- A COL BH site in East Dartmoor at Haytor, Devon 310m asl (1017 feet). mailto: www: http://www.lyneside.demon.co.uk DISCLAIMER - All views and opinions expressed by myself are personal and do not necessarily represent those of my employer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Martin Dixon wrote in message ... I doubt whether there's ever been one within the last few thousand years, since "somewhere in the UK" would include the Scottish mountains, the Pennines and Snowdonia. -- John Hall "Think wrongly if you please, but in all cases think for yourself."
