When I had an allotment one of the growers took me to see his Maize, or what
was left of it. A storm came, so he avoided the rain by getting into his car, big bang and saw his row of Maize which had been tall going up in smoke. He was Ok but a bit shaken!!! The tyres do nothing. Going to ground from 20 cm (the bottom of the vehicle) is not a problem for the lightning. There's a marvelous picture from the 50s of a test set-up with the spark going from the hubcap to the ground. It's the metal cage that offers protection.
