Thanks very much You need to tell us where, Martyn, although one might infer it's Yorkshire. There were a few wintry showers in May 1932, chiefly over high ground, but the main characteristic of the month was heavy and frequent rain, and record-low sunshine. Could it have been May 1935? There were some heavy snowfalls and severe frosts during that month. Philip Eden |

Hi, thanks for all your replies. My dad was born in Leeds, as I said, on May 5th 1932 - so it looks as though my gran just might have been imagining things! Maybe, I'll be able to shut her up now! Dear Martyn,
May 1932 was wet, cool and very dull [-87 hours at Kew and -99 hours on Norfolk coast] and yes your Gran was right as snow fell in the form of showers on the 5th to the 7th especially in the east of Scotland and in the Midlands. It was not what you would call heavy snow but the sort of conditions that can occur at that time of year with a polar airstream and convective showers leading to a sharp drop in temperature. Max temperatures were about 7C-8C in many places. A recent example of the sort of snow showers I mean is 1997.So, she may have looked out of the window and there was a heavy but brief snow shower that has stayed in her memory, firmly cemented there by being associated with the birth of one's child.
