The general pressure distribution for the period 1st to 10th January
2004 is marked by a LP centre near NW and W Scotland bringing warm SW to W winds over the country. At the same time, HP is present in the S, SE and E of the country. This would mean wetter conditions for the NW of the country and dryer conditions for the S and SE areas, as well as E Scotland. The general run of weather during the period is for LPs in the NW to be active at first as they drift E'ward across the N of the country. in a W'erly airstream. Then on 5th January, HP builds up from the SW as it travels E'wards into the North Sea and the near continent. It remains there till the end of the period with LP coming once again to the NW and W of the country. London temperature will be above average in the warm SW winds. Small dips in the temperature are expected near the 4th and 9th January. Warm peaks are expected near 2nd, 3rd and 5th. On 1st January a LP to the N of the British Isles draws in warm SW winds. Rain showers cross the country with the best weather in the SE as a flat HP ridge moves E'wards towards the S North Sea area. On 2nd January LP still lies to the N of the country and the HP to the SE of the country is moving away. A depression out in the Atlantic is moving towards the SW of Ireland. Fair weather in the SE with some showers over the rest of the country, but cloud could come into western areas late in the day. On 3rd January a LP near N and NW Scotland has a trough down the W of Ireland and perhaps a small LP off SW Ireland. Rainy weather to the W moves into the country. On 4th January. LP between E Scotland and SW Norway. Another LP SW of Iceland - . generally W winds over the country. HP has built up over the near continent. Cooler winds flow into Scotland for a short time. Showers in the N half of the country and better weather in the SE. On 5th January LP ou to the SW of Iceland with a trough E'wards in the direction of SW Scandinavia. Generally W winds over the country with pressure building up in the SW. Fair weather in the S and a few showers in the N of the country. On 6th January HP stretches from N to S down the E side of the country. Winds are light but SW in the W of Britain. Fog and frost are most likely in most parts. On 7th January the area of HP over the E part of the country moves into the near continent and a small belt of LP crosses the N of the country. Showers in the N of the country spread southwards. On 8th January LP leaves E Scotland and the North Sea as HP builds up once again in the SW of the country. Winds are from the NW bringing cool showery weather to the N of the country while fairer weather enters SW England and spreads E. On 9th January HP covers the North Sea, N France and Germany, while LP lies to the S or SW of Iceland with a secondary LP on its S flank. Winds are light from the S . Weather is mostly fair but chance of frost and fog early and late. On 10th January the HP remains over the North Sea and the near continent as the LP to the SW of Iceland and its secondary LP move nearer to the British Isles. Weather will be fair in the E of the country with light winds and fog and frost early, but the stronger S winds to the W of the country spread E'wards bringing cloud and showers. So to sum up, its an unsettled period of warm weather at first, turning dryer for some parts with frost and fog to go with it. Cheers, Keith |
