When I lived near Tomintoul in the 70's and 80's it was blocked from
September to May (well it seemed like it, in fact the guy that owns the
Lecht Ski Centre used to open it up down to Cockbridge to get the skiers up)

- On Sat, 27 Dec 2003 17:06:21 GMT, it was spake thus said in message Phil Gurr :

snip Alice in Wonderland stuff

Shopping in Tain myself this morning, not a trace of last night's snow
although A9 at Slochd would have been affected. The BBC travel sites are
a joke - issued from the Central Belt and probably don't even know
where the places are. ITV (Grampian) are a little better but tend only
to report on Aberdeenshire roads.

Road reports go into the same bin as forecasts up here - we make up our
own minds from our own experience.

Phil.

Many thanks for that both, I shall let him know only to believe what he sees !

From February '82 until May '90 I drove over the Lecht at least once a
month and was only once stopped by bad weather.

I can only think there is a blocked drain or similar in Balcurvie. It
did rain in Fife yesterday but was not spectacular - went for a walk
round Birnie Loch without getting more than very, very slightly damp.
However it was 'bracing' on the beach at Burntisland this morning!

I looked at various teletext and online road reports on 27 December 2003
too. The one that amused me most was that the A9 was hazardous, or
difficult, or blocked, or something, from Drumochter summit - northbound!! I
found this a bit hard to believe, as it's a single carriageway road over the
summit and for several miles to the north.

However, as I was travelling southbound, I decided to ignore the above
report, and drove uneventfully all the way down the A9 from Kinveachy to
Ballinluig on a nice safe black snow-free surface.

Now that I am safely home again, I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year,
including as much interesting weather as you all could ever want.

Anne
