It must be well above average (~2C above average) Depends which average you want to use :-) The CET is running at 5.9șC (as of this afternoon - the 16th). That is: 2.7 degC above the 1659-2000 mean 2.6 degC above the 1941-70 mean 2.3 degC above the 1951-80 mean 2.1 degC above the 1961-90 mean 1.7 degC above the 1971-2000 mean, and 1.0 degC above the 1988-2000 mean It might even be 0.2 degC below the 1991-2020 mean, but on the other hand it might not. Just a thought Professor Gordon Manley spent many years researching these early records, and he calibrated them so meticulously that I'd sooner rely on them than on some current ones. -- John Hall "If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties." I always thought that the early years of the CET were determined far more from inferences from diaries and agricultural records than from actual readings. I don't think that you can get enough precision from that. (Though IIRC the earliest mean monthly CETs are only given to the nearest 0.5C rather than the nearest 0.1C.) IIRC, the very earliest years rely on thermometers in only two locations, though. One big problem is that in the early years thermometers were often hung indoors in an unheated room rather than outdoors, perhaps because they were valuable items. Presumably such records would not be usable. -- John Hall "If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties." I'm rather surprised to hear that we are running a couple of degrees above average. Here my average max so far is 6.0C and min 2.6C. OK, the min seems a little high and last night was my first air frost of the month but the whole feel of January so far is very average. There hasn't been any prolonged very mild weather, indeed I haven't even reached double figures the highest has been 9.9C. Col -- Bolton, Lancashire. 160m asl. http://www.reddwarfer.btinternet.co.uk .... the CET is biased towards the Midlands/ N & W Home Counties of England, so not necessarily applicable to you as to *actual* anomaly, though I would imagine that given the values you quote above, particular the minimum, that you will be somewhere at least 1 degC above. Down here in the 'soft' south, I am running an anomaly (against the whole-month average) of +1.8degC, having been up as high as +2.3degC a few days ago.
