Cold spell - cards on the table time...

Is this potential cold spell actually going to come off, or (snow lovers)
destined for another let-down?
The GFS run seems wildly different with each run, yet still ends up bitterly
cold!
All eyes on the ECMWF I presume..

Any thoughts would be welcomed......

Thanks, John

Those charts would indicate one of the best polar blasts in many a year.
Here in the central lowlands, not much snow makes it over the highlands on
winter northerlies, but that would certainly carry some mighty snow showers.
And night time minimums, well - potentially very severe in this part of the
country with the afore-mentioned shelter.
A north easterly to follow would be the icing on the cake, but that GFS run
seem to shy away from such a scenario.
Let's get the mild stuff out the way first.
Alex.

And the estimated dew point for such a chart,

No snow there for you ng., but a frost to freeze your pipes probably!
Will this be the one to come off?
Alex.

Cold spell - cards on the table time...Maybe

Must be very careful using model forecasts involving 850 and 500 MB data,
the bit that really matters around UK waters is the few hundred feet above
the ground. Thicknesses of large chunks of upper air are not the whole
story.
On the whole though, this looks as good a chance as any over recent years of
getting some "traditional" winter weather.
If you like snow, then best to look out for Polar Lows in an "arctic"
northerly, then track whether they will go down the east or west of the UK.

This morning's gfs tends to disagree with a north east flow setting in
and percipitation all along the east , one to watch
on all the models i feel!
