Default Some new records for Greece

Wind gusts, that caused numerous problems in the eastern parts of the
country, reached 182 kph in terms of average wind speed close to the island
of Limnos, in the northern Aegean. Peak gusts were just over 200 kph and the
height of sea waves was 15 metres. 180 kph in Andros and Naxos, 160 kph in
Chios (all Aegean isles).

The mass media are suggesting that another record was settled, as
temperatures dropped by 12C in three hours in northern Greece -however, I
think that March 1987 might not be that happy with that, as temperatures
dropped by 14C in less than an hour in parts of the country.

Northern continental Greece had a clear and bitterly cold day: Florina was
reporting -12C at 9 am, while villages just outside the town made it
to -18C. Some other temperature minima for Friday:

Thessaloniki (Retziki station): -7C
Kastoria: -10C.
Penteli, Athens: -8C

The island of Limnos, in the northern Aegean, has declared a state of
emergency. Over half a metre of snow has been accumulated on the island
since yesterday -and I just saw that it is reporting heavy snowfalls again-
which caused chaos in the power distribution network. An old woman died in
her house there yesterday because of the low temperature in it.

Inhabitants of Samos, in the eastern Aegean, were holding tightly from their
houses' furniture when the sea waves flooded all areas by the coastline.

Schools were closed on Friday in northern Athens and some prefectures of
northern Greece.

Yannis, SE Athens
ms 0.6C (between ms 9C and +1C around the city right now)
