Thanks Tom. :-)

I tried it with my location and it was 30metres too low for may location at
70m. This would only be correct at the level of the River Ver.

It doesn't look very reliable. It gives 125m for Amersham-on-the-Hill
and 142m for Amersham Old Town. The Old Town is in the Misbourne valley
while Amersham-on-the-Hill stands above the valley, as the name
suggests, and is certainly higher than the Old Town.

I'm curious - I've always wondered what height above sea level my
property is. Short of having a suitable O/S map, is there anywhere
online where I can find my location and see the height?

Just have a look at the OS Explorer Map in a (decent) bookshop

First sensible suggestion. I find this thread very sad indeed.

Yes, how sad it is that somebody should want to find an online
source for determining their height abve sea level.

A sad thread like this once alerted me to the presence of online maps,
a useful resource.

Come on now chaps we all look to the net for our info.
I have been trying to find the exact altitude for my weather station but the OS
maps dont make it clear to me.
So i brought an old aircraft altimeter and set it too read QFE(Hight above sea
level)at Gatwick airport. This is my datum and is 202ft AMSL, and when i arrive
home it tells me a height of approx 415 Ft.
Heavens above seemed to think i was at 475 Ft!I am the highest part of Crawley
Down.

No we don't.

If I want to know the altitude of somewhere, or it's coordinates, I
use a paper map.

Hi,
QFE is height above airfield elevation. You need to set your barometer
to QNH (height above sea level)
If you look on a 1:25000 map of your area and find the nearest spot
height marked on the map which will be in metres. Convert this to
feet.
Find the nearest airport and request the current QNH reading which
will be in millibars. Deduct 1 millibar from the QNH reading for every
30ft above the QNH (or 1 millibar for every 10 metres) and set your
barometer by turning the adjusting screw at the back to set the dial
to the adjusted figure.
If you look on this page you can get airfield QNH readings:
