One wonders how it's even possible to fly to places like Scandanavia in the
winter if a few cm of expected snowfall requires a complete shutdown.

Jamie,

They have a very efficient clearin system but let's not forget the intensity
of the snowfall today, quite unprecidented. Saying this, we do provide
forecasts to a certain Irish carrier to the cockpit to advise of weather at
the destination airport.

It's a good job I flew from Manchester to Heathrow yesterday rather than
today!

Luton reopened with just one taxiway at 22.10. Airport reporting -5C with
the wind-chill at -13C. Luton seems to be the coldest airport in the UK at
the moment (00:00z ) according to http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/GB_cc.html

Are you saying that in the history of British aviation, there has never
been a day when snow fell as rapidly as today (ie Wednesday)?

Even places that have this weather every year can struggle when the
weather happens so quickly. Rapid ice and snow really delayed us this
time last year at St Louis, Missouri. It takes time to sort things out!

Most airports would have had problems yesterday (as did the road
clearing gangs). The temperature sequence involved, plus the rapid onset
of rain, then snow, coupled to the sharp wind veer (with shear in the
approach environment), would have tested most. With high traffic
volumes, I'm afraid there is little that can be done as in this
particular situation. Safety was paramount, and a good thing too.

Martin.
