Very heavy snowfalls in central Greece

Good morning all.

Very heavy snowfall indeed throughout Athens right now. Numerous problems
already around the capital, as temperatures have dropped considerably (-3.3C
here in the southeast, down to -7C in the northernmost suburbs) and the
roads have been white for some hours already. Accumulations around the city
between 10 cm and 70 cm.
I took my chances and drove downtown, I will send you some pictures from the
centre of Athens later on.

Accumulations are now between 10 cm (beaches) and just over a metre
(Malakasa, northern Attica) in non-mountainous areas around Athens. The
temperature within the city of Athens is ranging between -10C (!) and -2C at
the moment.
BLSN and -SN at the moment here, in SE Athens, with accumulations at 20 cm
and drifts up to 40 cm.

Now come the pictures. First, the Athens historical centre, of which I've
always wished to take snow pictures:

Schools will remain closed today (so I'm missing an exam at the university,
hehe). Driving is already prohibited in many areas of Athens.

Great photos Yannis! Now why can't we have a climate like that?

Beautiful photos Yannis. Never been to Athens and am now not sure to visit
in the summer or the winter!

Thanks, Dave

Excellent pictures Yannis.

BBC Radio Midday News mentioned that Athens Airport is closed at the
moment due to snow. Most people over here seem rather surprised to
hear that, to say the least. Enjoy it, I'm green with envy!

Great photos indeed, Athens must be in line for an ice day today? Which
must be a very rare event?
We could have a climate like that Ian... if we upped sticks and moved 15
hundred miles or so south east.
Alex.

Do you have any figures for the mountains of Crete, Yannis?

It is rather surprising to many people that the places where they soaked up the
sun and the ouzo could be under inches of snow.

I was quite surprised myself about 6 years ago to find two inches of snow at
Marseilles in November. Some places in the Med must be fairly free of the
threat of snow at low levels - Sicily, Malta and the Balearics spring to mind.
