Very heavy snowfalls in central Greece
Good morning all.
Very heavy snowfall indeed throughout Athens right now. Numerous problems already around the capital, as temperatures have dropped considerably (-3.3C here in the southeast, down to -7C in the northernmost suburbs) and the roads have been white for some hours already. Accumulations around the city between 10 cm and 70 cm. I took my chances and drove downtown, I will send you some pictures from the centre of Athens later on. Accumulations are now between 10 cm (beaches) and just over a metre
(Malakasa, northern Attica) in non-mountainous areas around Athens. The temperature within the city of Athens is ranging between -10C (!) and -2C at the moment. BLSN and -SN at the moment here, in SE Athens, with accumulations at 20 cm and drifts up to 40 cm. Now come the pictures. Which must be a very rare event? We could have a climate like that Ian... if we upped sticks and moved 15 hundred miles or so south east. Alex. |

Do you have any figures for the mountains of Crete, Yannis?

It is rather surprising to many people that the places where they soaked up the sun and the ouzo could be under inches of snow. I was quite surprised myself about 6 years ago to find two inches of snow at Marseilles in November. Some places in the Med must be fairly free of the threat of snow at low levels - Sicily, Malta and the Balearics spring to mind. JPG |

message ... Great photos indeed, Athens must be in line for an ice day today? Which must be a very rare event? The last ice day I recorded here was January 5th, 2002. Today is an ice day for this site of SE Athens for sure (min -4.3C, max -1.1C so far), I bet it should be an ice day for downtown too. Skies are broken now and there is some light snow falling from the clouds stuck a mile north of me, on top of the hills (orographic cloudiness as always, this is the lee side of the mountains and hills). Blowing snow appears to be a problem as it reduces visibility to ..two bushes (lol, that means around 5-10m) towards the edge of the city. Pictures will follow.
