Good morning all.
Very heavy snowfall indeed throughout Athens right now. Numerous problems already around the capital, as temperatures have dropped considerably (-3.3C here in the southeast, down to -7C in the northernmost suburbs) and the roads have been white for some hours already. Accumulations around the city between 10 cm and 70 cm. I took my chances and drove downtown, I will send you some pictures from the centre of Athens later on. Accumulations are now between 10 cm (beaches) and just over a metre
(Malakasa, northern Attica) in non-mountainous areas around Athens. The temperature within the city of Athens is ranging between -10C (!) and -2C at the moment. BLSN and -SN at the moment here, in SE Athens, with accumulations at 20 cm and drifts up to 40 cm. Now come the pictures. First, the Athens historical centre, of which I've always wished to take snow pictures: Temple of Zeus, with and without flash: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/zeus1.jpg http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/zeus2.jpg Taverna in Athens: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/plaka5.jpg Ice forming in Plaka, Athens: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/plaka6.jpg Theory street, just below the Acropolis: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/theorias.jpg Hephaestus temple (Thisseio): http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/thisseio.jpg Part of the tube line and the Acropolis: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/thisseio6.jpg A cactus downtown: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/zappeio3.jpg Statue downtown: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/zappeio1.jpg A snowman, holding an cup of ex warm coffee: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/thisseio5.jpg A cafe at Thisseio: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/thisseio4.jpg Zappeio megaron: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/zappeio2.jpg View towards the Acropolis from the roman forum http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/plaka4.jpg Plaka, Athens http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/plaka1.jpg The Acropolis hill: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/acropolis2.jpg The Parthenon and the theatre of Herod the Attic: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/acropolis6.jpg http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/acropolis7.jpg http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/acropolis10.jpg Symbol of meteorology, the "Winds" temple http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/aerides1.jpg http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/aerides2.jpg The Forum: http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/agora.jpg Oh, the cabbages in my garden :-( http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/snow/cabbage.jpg The following pictures are from Pericles Z: National road in northern Athens: 50 cm of snow http://www.periz.dial.pipex.com/imag...4/13-0109b.jpg A park in Athens (poor pines) http://www.periz.dial.pipex.com/imag...4/13-0355a.jpg Northern Athens roads: http://www.periz.dial.pipex.com/imag...04/13-0103.jpg More photos from today as the storm was kicking in: http://www.periz.dial.pipex.com/hwpr.htm Schools will remain closed today (so I'm missing an exam at the university, hehe). Which must be a very rare event? We could have a climate like that Ian... if we upped sticks and moved 15 hundred miles or so south east. Alex. |

Today is an ice day for this site of SE Athens for sure (min -4.3C, max -1.1C so far), I bet it should be an ice day for downtown too. Skies are broken now and there is some light snow falling from the clouds stuck a mile north of me, on top of the hills (orographic cloudiness as always, this is the lee side of the mountains and hills). Blowing snow appears to be a problem as it reduces visibility to ..two bushes (lol, that means around 5-10m) towards the edge of the city. Pictures will follow. It is rather surprising to many people that the places where they soaked up the sun and the ouzo could be under inches of snow. I was quite surprised myself about 6 years ago to find two inches of snow at Marseilles in November. Some places in the Med must be fairly free of the threat of snow at low levels - Sicily, Malta and the Balearics spring to mind. JPG |
