I understand what you are saying now. It does get pronounced minith
around here, though.

I've heard it quite often too. There seem to be lots of variations in
Welsh pronunciation.

And occasionally spelling and gender. Now remind me again why I
decided to learn it? :-)

Don't we have the correct symbol for a schwa somewhere?
Would it show up properly here?

It's much easier in printed Hebrew, where a schwa is shown as a
colon. But then, they don't use the symbol for anything else.
Here, it would just get confusing.

Hardly. The locals round here can barely cope with English. And
that includes my teenagers, both of whom used to be able to speak
it rather well. Is there some sort of temporary atrophying
process that takes place somewhere between 10 and 30?

I had a Welsh speaking friend at Uni who was studying Chinese.. Said
it was a doddle compared with learning English
