What is it about newsgroups that results in the longest threads often
being the ones that are OT (or at least have drifted substantially
OT)? No criticism implied, I'm just interested in a bemused sort of
way.

I had a Welsh speaking friend at Uni who was studying Chinese.. Said
it was a doddle compared with learning English

Actually, that doesn't surprise me. I was once asked how I knew
the difference in pronounciation between through, though,
thorough, cough, bough, tough and hiccough. I had to explain
that I didn't know how I knew - I just did. English is a
horrendous language to learn.

Regarding the reason that "hiccough" is spelt like that, this link may
tell you more than you really want to know:

Its a darn sight easier than Leominster or Orleton - if you are not in
on the secret.

My wife cannot manage to pronounce Froncysyllte.. but it just rolls
off the tounge.

Spelling's a bit awry, not that it would affect the pronunciation a lot.
Try Rhosllanerchrugog. I do know the area.
