uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Hello group
Does anyone have a link to any websites that would give me weather forecast for the next 21 days for various locations in the UK please? I know NOTHING about weather forecasting, so I'm just loooking for a site that will give me expected sunshine, temperature, and rainfall. TIA L |

If anyone on this group or elsewhere could make forecasts that far ahead, then he would be a multi-millionaire by now. Six to seven days is generally accepted as being the maximum limit with little better than very broad ideas for the following few days. Jack |

Jack There is a general principle of persistence, where the weather tomorrow is much like the weather today. So I'll predict that until the end of the month it will be sunshine and showers with below average temperature, just as it has been this week. On the other hand he could try my rival Roeder's site if some one would post it :-) Cheers, Alastair. |

![]() "Alastair McDonald" k There is a general principle of persistence, where the weather tomorrow is much like the weather today. On that basis, so today is much like Tuesday then? Totally different and I for one have no truck with the "persistence theory". All that can be said is that there will be some weather in the next 21 days. Jack |

A 3 week forecast as good as we can currently do 3 days? Oh I think he would, assuming he went private and didn't work selflessly for the greater good in the Met Office ![]() Col -- Bolton, Lancashire. 160m asl. http://www.reddwarfer.btinternet.co.uk |

As I'm too busy rustling up some longe range forecasts, I've asked my deputy butler to post this reply from my luxury yacht which is currently moored off the coast of Barbados! :-) Victor |

Their 7-day forecast predicts rainfall to the nearest mm, windspeed to +/- 1 mph, pressure to the nearest mb, cloud cover to +/-1%. Does that mean that they are reporting figures to a spurious degree of accuracy or are their predictions really that accurate for the weather 7 days from now? Over egging the cake slightly? Victor |

![]() "Chef!" Now I am confused. I sometimes refer to www.metcheck.com. Their 7-day forecast predicts rainfall to the nearest mm, windspeed to +/- 1 mph, pressure to the nearest mb, cloud cover to +/-1%. That particular website has been discussed endlessly in the past. It is very cleverly put together, neat and presentable (full marks for that) But it has fooled a lot of people into thinking that because it purports to be so accurate, then if must be extremely trustworthy. Don't be taken in. It's a bit like the conversion of units that seems to give an amazing degree of precision. For example, a cloud base might be reported as being 3,000 feet - clearly accurate to no better that +/- 100 feet. (two significant figures). That is then converted to 914 metres and suddenly we have an accuracy (?) of one part in 914. It is a rule of thumb (commonsense actually) that you cannot get more precision in an answer than the level of precision that was put into the calculation Look around your supermarket and you will see conversions from a round number of eg pounds into an amazingly precise number of grams. I drive my wife mad (also a science graduate) by forever pointing this out: "Yes I know, you have said that all before many times. But does it really matter?" It does to me! So, don't be fooled into believing that metcheck is capable of such precision. It's a brave effort, but interpret the output with caution. Jack |
