Default Radar - East Anglia

Can anyone confirm the heavy rain over East Anglia or is the radar playing
up. I have taken a look a the sferic on the Met Office site and nothing
appears to be showing plus the radar sequence does appear to be rather
strange

Thanks

From http://www.booty.demon.co.uk/uswfaqfr.htm

Anomalous propagation. When the temperature and / or the humidity changes
sharply with height, a mirage effect bends the beam and normally invisible
objects intrude into the return. Classic examples occur when nocturnal
cooling is especially strong; with sea-breezes where cool, marine air
undercuts warm / dry land air, and with the similar cool undercutting
downdraughts from well-organised mesoscale convective clusters. Be aware
though that in extreme cases, even the filtering applied may allow some
anomalous echoes through.
