I thought the bit about lengthy training in meteorology was missing but
I see that such is no longer required:

never mind eh?

I thought the ITV presenters weren't trained meteorologists,
in contrast to the BBC.

A bit sad the the Met Office page had to mention the "former model"
and "sunshine girl" bit. Sort of sums it up, really.

I see from the Met Office page that there is a "Met Office Controller of
Media Presentation". I wonder if technical content comes under his
domain?

Inspects the tarts for content more like. Puts them out in the rain too
no doubt:

"... Now, she finds herself working a seven-day week in the East Anglian
public eye. She has cruised into success ever since collecting her
grades at Norwich School, but the question is how did she do it?

‘There was a massive element of luck, in fact the whole thing was simply
luck.’ Oh dear, so perhaps her success had nothing to do with Norwich
School at all. In fact, in late 1999, Norwich School seemed nothing but
a curse for Becky ....."

....But as luck would have it, she had a gianormous set of jugs and not
the haporth of sense about when to come in out of the proverbials.

(I do wish they could be encouraged not to smile while they are getting
drenched. Some sort of choreography classes would come in handy for
those pointless hand gestures too! Some of them look like they learned
their stuff at the Wallflower School of Disco.)

To add insult to injury, the Beeb has their lot giving travelogues while
they are out there.

He he if you want to work with top models you know where to apply ....

In this New Labour age of cheesy smiles, veneer, gloss, money, spin, and glamour
who needs boring old technical ability. You should know that Martin, tut tut.

Sigh, this country!!
I know you won't agree, Will, but you woudn't see this in America. In my
opinion of course.
That BBC weather website, and the METO one .. hmm , all looks very 'British'
to me.... e.g 'crap'

Yeah, I think that's true. ITV has "presenters" while those on the BBC
actually know what they are talking about. Does anyone watch the ITV
weather? I don't bother as it's a waste of time. "By around midday, the rain
will be situated about here (waves hand about)" Great!

How are forecasts presented in the rest of Europe? Do they do it more
seriously or do they, like us, tend to regard it as entertainment? And what
about America, Canada, Australia etc? Has anyone got actual experience of
other countries' forecasts? Just interested.

I regularly watch the TV forecasts from RTE Radio Telefis Éireann in the
ROI. The quality of presentation is far superior to what we endure. The
dumbing down process we see hasn't spread there. I was watching it with my
son a few weeks ago (he knows nothing about meteorology) and mentioned the
contrast to him before one forecast. He agreed the forecast was more
professional, e.g. with fronts gives their proper names and concepts like
instability and the subsequent showers mentioned. Such forecasts always
start showing the Atlantic/European synoptic chart. I guess it helps that
all the presenters are trained meteorologists. There had been a move a
year or two back to bring in the type of "forecaster" we see on ITV but
this was soon brought to an end.
