Continuous rain in Chalfont St Giles for the past hour. Now (11.25 BST)
moderate in intensity. The radar doesn't look too promising for the next
hour or two.

I was just thinking how dissapointing this weekends weather has been.
We may have missed rain here in Southend-on-Sea, but apart from some
glimpses of the sun this morning it's been rely autumnal.

Kids are back to school next week so summer will return then :-)

August temps here about 1°c above the 1971-2000 average.
Rainfall 175% of average.

Rain ceased 11.45 BST but it looks as if there is more to come. More
than a hint of autumn in the air with the temperature 14.5c in a fresh
WNW wind.

.... yes, we've had a couple of fairly heavy showers here in the past
couple of hours, though the sun is out now and it's looking quite
pleasant. With the cyclonic look to the pattern (surface and aloft), the
weather type is not too surprising ...

Had the "Times" on the 'phone an hour ago wanting to know if it was
worth moving the Bank Holiday (for EWNI) back to the start of August (as
it used to be prior to 1965). I said moving holidays around to catch the
weather was like a fisherman moving along a riverbank after several
hours of "no-take", only to find that the pitch left behind immediately
yielded results to the next angler!

And so how many marks out of ten do we give the Bank Holiday forecast from
just before it started. About 2, I would suggest. Sod's law has struck for
the forecaster's again unfortunately!

Crumping showers thro' the Cheshire Gap and we are having one every hour or
so.
They are on the way down to Chalfont St Giles!
When can I mow the bloody lawn?

Pleasant enough here, coolish breeze but strong sunshine. 18.9 at 13:00 so
might just top 20. I expect it will easily top 21 somewhere on the south
coast. Saturday was a glorious day, slightly warmer and little wind.

Sadly the surf is all chopped up. Should be good in a couple of days time
though, with a light off-shore on the north coast, and a reasonable good
looking depression in mid-Atlantic by then. Most important of all the August
Bank holiday crowds will have gone. There is something about some of the
people who visit Cornwall on August Bank holiday which distinguishes them
from anybody else. The rest of the year it's fine, but an approaching August
Bank holiday fills me with dread.

.... to judge by the comments from our neighbours (for whom we were
looking after the house), the hoteliers in the next county along from
you (that's Devon, not Prince Edward Island) are hopping-mad with the
BBC and the Met Office for the coverage of recent weeks (& this is the
latter's first summer in Devon). It's an old story of course: a lot of
coverage of floods, heavy rain, poor weather etc., but in the Torbay
area (and perhaps along the south coast of Cornwall - though haven't
checked that), even if rain has been about, August can often come up
trumps - hence the Cornish Riviera Express! We used to get the same
complaints from touriest boards all around the coast in late summer -
tone down the doom/gloom, we're having a lovely summer! You can't win.

Martin.

I think I'll move to the SW Graham, because it always sounds fantastic from
your posts - unfortunately for a mere visitor it always seems to rain for
two weeks!

You are right, the weather here has been much better than the forecasts, but
more particularly the press, have suggested. (Unless of course you were in
the Boscastle area). It was particularly annoying when I saw in the Sunday
papers reports of people queuing on the M5 on Saturday to leave rain soaked
Devon & Cornwall, when it had been such a lovely day on the coast. That's
one reason why a put a picture of St Ives taken Saturday afternoon on
www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/StIves.html , to show what it was actually
like.

August has been changeable (to say the least) but it hasn't been anywhere
near as wet here as in 1997. Also it's been warm, and on the coast at least,
fairly sunny between the showers. I suspect the sunshine figures on the
coast will be near normal as there has been none of that persistent mist you
can get here with more stable SW winds. As May & June were so good, it does
feel like a long, if unpredictable summmer.

Graham
