![]() Seems to be a pretty nasty situation in Grenada as it was directly hit by hurricane Ivan on Tuesday evening. Ivan seems to have been on the border between 3 to 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale at the time. Here's an URL that goes into the situation: http://www.stormcarib.com/reports/2004/grenada.shtml It is likened to the aftermath in Hiroshima, 85% of buildings destroyed, all trees down, power, telephone, radio, water out!! Extract from public advisory update 0635 AST (1035Z) 09/09/04
AN AIR FORCE RESERVE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INVESTIGATING IVAN THIS MORNING RECENTLY REPORTED...AT 614 AM AST OR 1014Z...A FLIGHT-LEVEL WIND OF 154 KT IN THE NORTHEAST QUADRANT. THEY ALSO REPORTED A LOWER CENTRAL PRESSURE OF 920 MB...SUGGESTING THAT IVAN MAY CONTAIN SURFACE WINDS A LITTLE STRONGER THAN THE 160 MPH INDICATED IN THE 5 AM AST ADVISORY. DROPSONDE WIND REPORTS ALSO INDICATED WINDS OF NEAR 210 MPH AT AN ALTITUDE OF ABOUT 350 FEET ABOVE THE OCEAN SURFACE. -- Jim Moulton, Northampton N52:17 W00:50 105m (335') ASL |

One shudders to think what the sea surface must be like under those conditions. JPG |

That's category five, and it gets worse. Extract from today's 11 am GMT NHC Discussion on Ivan: http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/at200409.disc.html "The upper-level outflow pattern is impressive and well-established ....And if anything...will only get better for the next 72-96 hours. Therefore...the future intensity will likely be modulated by inner- core convective changes and land interaction since th water ahead of Ivan is only forecast to get warmer...as warm as 30c south of Cuba and over the Florida Straits." So, Ivan is currently forecast to: - Cross Jamaica as a strong cat. 4 bordering on cat. 5. - Cross Cuba as a Cat 4. - reach Florida as a Cat 3 or Cat 4. This is not good. -- Dave |

Dave Ludlow : - Cross Jamaica as a strong cat. 4 bordering on cat. 5. - Cross Cuba as a Cat 4. - reach Florida as a Cat 3 or Cat 4. This is not good. So this will be the third hurricane in a month to hit Florida; 2, they said, was highly unusual. But 3? Whether or not this is a result of global warming, just maybe George Bush will start to come on board with the rest of the world in doing something about emissions now, especially with a brother to look after in the hurricane's path. When it starts to hit home... ? Adrian -- Adrian Shaw ais@ Adran Cyfrifiadureg, Prifysgol Cymru, aber. Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, Cymru ac. http://users.aber.ac.uk/ais uk |
